Hispanic high school students to get jumpstart on college readiness

The Association of Latin American Students (ALAS) at Rock Valley College will be hosting its annual High School Leadership Conference on Friday, May 3, 2013, 9:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the RVC main campus (3301 North Mulford Road).

The event is designed to allow Hispanic high school students to jumpstart their skills for college readiness, develop educational and leadership skills, and network with peers and key insiders.

The theme this year is Education Today…..Leader Tomorrow (Educación Hoy….Líder Mañana) and will feature guest speaker Jimmy Cabrera. Cabrera has been a professional speaker for over 30 years and speaks both in the educational and corporate communities.  He has presented in over 1,500 schools, colleges, and universities and over 1.5 million students, teachers, and parents have experienced his high energy, motivational, and educational presentations.

The afternoon will consist of breakout sessions the students can attend on topics ranging from learning how to get started at RVC to information on the College’s Running Start program. Information tables from numerous RVC departments will also be made available throughout the day so students can learn more and ask questions about RVC.

Approximately 800 Latino students from the Rock Valley College district are expected to attend.
