I do not like the idea of pledging to a flag, while the constitution is being slowly eroded. I watch as these politicians wear their flag lapel pins, but turn around and vote on a law that allows the government to take more of your rights away.

As we fought the communist red scare by showing how the Soviet Union did not believe in individual rights, privacy, and freedoms, it appears there are those within this country that are willing to give up those same principles in the name of security.

Once they inserted "Under God" in the pledge, they should have retired it. They took away the original intent -- which was of all things, a way to convince people to buy more flags. Beautiful!

Right or wrong, the Pledge has grown roots and intertwined its words into American culture. Any attempt to retire it is DOA. However, I would like to see a movement to 'restore the Pledge' so that it ends "with liberty, equality, and justice for all."

Not only is it faithful to the writer's original intent, the debate could lead to thoughtful discussion about the Pledge, AND it flows better (say the restored version aloud).

How about a web survey/petition drive hosted by the rrstar to get things started?

It would be fine with me if it was "retired".
Although I respect our flag dearly I don't pledge allegiance to it. I pledge allegiance only to the "Republic for which it stands".
