Bike lane striping has begun

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that Morsay Drive was striped for a bike lane. There hasn’t been an official announcement yet, and none is scheduled at this time.
I sent an e-mail to Gary McIntire, bike rider and RMAP planner. Here’s his response.
“The city of Rockford has begun the on-street bicycle improvements that we talked about on February 4, 2008, when the mayor and city staff (included me) discussed this issue with you. I was on vacation last week and got an update yesterday afternoon from the Traffic Engineering section of the Public Works Department. I believe that streets that were selected, discussed and printed in Rockford Register Star will be done this year.”
David G. Camacho Jr. from the city also responded.
“We are planning on having a press release and ceremony regarding the bicycle lane improvements. The ceremony will probably start at Morsay Drive when the first bike symbol is painted. The details will be coordinated with the mayor’s office. I have a contractor that will be continuing the work started by our Traffic Division. The contractor will be in town in approximately a week to two weeks.”
I’ve been a bit slow in posting this. The responses above were sent Aug. 26, so it shouldn’t be much longer before we find out more about bike lanes.

Good move Rockford.
This is something that costs nearly nothing, yet makes a real difference.
This should receive much more coverage than a blog post if area drivers are to be made more aware of bikers sharing the road.

It will get more coverage as I get more details.
