A Seat at the Table

Working on endorsements

October 2nd, 2008 at 08:33am Wally Haas

At today’s edit board meeting we’ll discuss endorsements for Winnebago County Board chairman and Winnebago County state’s attorney. We decided on our presidential endorsement Monday and plan to run that edit on Sunday.

In the chairman’s race and in the state’s attorney race we held debates here at the News Tower. You can see edited versions at rrstar.com. Videos are about half way down the home page on the right side.

This is the first year we’ve used a debate format to determine endorsements in what we consider key races. We thought it would be better to see side-by-side comparisons rather than bring the candidates in one at a time. We think the process will help us make better decisions.

Other endorsements will be based on candidate forums, questionnaires and news stories. There are a lot of local races this year for us to study.  I think it’s good to have competition on the ballot. It keeps incumbents on their toes and makes challengers do a lot of homework to sharpen their message.

You guys kill me. There have been 6 letters to the editor in 14 days endorsing Cathy Ward for a Boone County Board seat. That’s one just about EVERY OTHER DAY !!!. My husband wrote a letter dated 9/19 criticizing your pal Dick Durbin and the messiah Barack Obama and it still has not appeared. Do you even try to be bi-partisan or don’t you even care anymore?
I was at Woodmans not long ago and there was a representative from the Rockford Register Star trying to GIVE your paper away and people wouldn’t even take it. I stood off to the side and watched for awhile, your reputation has really taken a dive.

I don’t know about your husband’s letter, but I do know we’ve published two of your letters critical of Sen. Durbin (Aug. 27, June 2)

Well he talked to you about it and you were going to print it but apparently that was a brush off. Tim Klopfenstein.
The only way mine got printed was after I verified, re-verified and got a letter from the Pope that my facts were correct. Then Mary Kaull was satisfied that yes indeedy Dick Durbin was in fact imperfect and she had to print the stinkinng letter.

If I promised that and didn\’t deliver, I apologize. I don\’t remember the conversation, but I deal with dozens of phone calls every day and can\’t remember them all. Readers are allowed one letter every 30 days so you are well within the parameters for submitting a letter of your own.

Apology accepted, I know you’re busy and you’ve been gone. Do you want me to resend it to you or do you still have his letter?

Please resend it. I don’t know whether Mary has it in her files or not.

I just saw that your husband’s letter is scheduled to run Sunday. That decision must have been made before we started this conversation. Sorry for the confusion
