A Seat at the Table

What should we stream next?

Last week we did the Rockford mayoral debate. This week we did an interview with LaVonne Sheffield, the Rockford School Board’s choice to be superintendent of schools.

The mayoral debate had a lot of viewers; the superintendent chat, not so many. So what should we try next?

Executive Editor Linda Grist Cunningham wrote on her blog, “Editor’s note,” that we need to find a way to do a real Editorial Board meeting and not the “stilted back-and-forth.”

Linda and I talked for a bit yesterday about how to proceed. She thinks that the audio is what’s important and it doesn’t really matter what the camera picks up as long as you folks out there in Web land can hear what’s being talked about.

One thought was to set up a single, stationary camera in the room the Editorial Board  usually meets and then hit record. You won’t see us all, but you would hear our conversations.

Would you view an edit board meeting if it were presented like that, or do you want to see more exciting video? We’re new to this moving pictures game so we appreciate your feedback.

I personally would love to be “A fly on the wall” at some of those meetings ( which would be a good name for such a camera ). I’m not sure however how often I would watch or if it would be what I imagine. It my actually taint how editors would inter-act or if they would feel free to say what they would like to say or need to say. It would however give you the chance to work out some of those bugs that you’re wrestling with. Hows the old adage go “practice makes perfect”.
As for what would draw a large number of viewers. Of course that would be managing to organize a debate between the two Machesney Park presidential candidates. If you can’t manage to get Strickland to participate then might I suggest you bringing your equipment to the forum on the 26th and stream that. And please have Alex Gary ask pertinent questions ( not to imply that they wouldn’t be ) and allow that exchange to be formatted more like a debate. Is that room really going to be big enough or is the fire marshall going to shut it down? Wouldn’t the Harlem auditorium be more appropriate?
As for your wondering if I would steam the audio anly, I would prefer a picture, but this is a newspaper and I think that would be acceptable as long as the subject matter is newsworthy. Anyway, thats my first thoughts. Thanks for the question.
