General Mills announced it would further reduce the amount of sugar in its cereals, prompting the nutrition police in the News Tower (that would be the Editorial Board) to applaud loudly as if on a sugar high. Check out our editorial in Friday’s Register Star.
I felt a little bit guilty comtemplating the issue. For years, we had a rule in our house that sugary cereals would be eaten on Saturdays only. My kids dubbed their favorites, “Saturday morning cereal.” But I wasn’t exactly strict about the rule. Saturdays-only turned into snow days, or days off school, or days when I wasn’t up to answering my kids’ increasingly sophisticated arguments as to why they deserved the special cereal.
Now, my kids are 17 and 20. My son still loves cereal, but he has become a compulsive label-reader and won’t pollute his body with too much sugar or fat. My daughter runs out of the house too many mornings without having breakfast at all. (See, I’m still not a good parent.)
In any case, General Mills has done the right thing. Read the press release HERE. It’s too late for people like me — my favorites were Quisp and Quake — but maybe we can retrain a generation not to expect their breakfast to taste like candy.
