Friday daybook: School report cards and cars made in Belvidere

Report cards on schools in the Rock River Valley show that 53 percent of the 142 schools tracked by the Rockford Register Star did not make required adequate yearly progress gains.

Cathy Bayer’s report in today’s newspaper also shows the news isn’t all gloomy –that about half of those failing schools posted higher marks than last year. From Cathy’s story today:

Local school leaders are pointing to bright spots — however small — amid test data released today by the Illinois State Board of Education. The percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards continued to drop in Rockford School District schools, but not by big margins as in previous years.

“For our lowest-performing schools, we stopped the dive. And that’s all I expected to do,” said Rockford Superintendent LaVonne Sheffield.

We have reports today from Belvidere, Byron, Durand, Harlem, Hononegah, Kinnikinnick, North Boone, Oregon, Pecatonica, Prairie Hill, Rockford, Rockton, Shirland, South Beloit, Winnebago.

Automotive news: Alex Gary had five blog posts in the last 24 hours on Chrysler, Fiat and Belvidere. Here’s one speculating what model will follow the Belvidere trio in 2012:

The Detroit Free Press, citing suppliers and consultants, is speculating that the first new car to roll out of Belvidere’s Chrysler assembly plant will be a hatchback that will resemble the Alfa Romeo Giulietta.
