The American work force is dynamic and changing as employers seek ways to find employees to make their companies grow. The phenomenon of the Baby Boom generation reaching early retirement age and leaving employment is daunting since there are insufficient younger workers to replace their numbers and skills.

A trend which has been emerging for several years is workers near or at retirement age remaining in the work force on a less than full time basis. They work to maintain or supplement the significant costs of medical coverage and supplement early retirement incomes.  Many enjoy the opportunity to remain engaged with co-workers and maintain the career skills they enjoy. These flex time workers often do not wish supervisory positions so as to make their work day less stressful.

The employers seek these workers for their unique abilities which are difficult to replace.  They offer a strong and dependable work ethic and flexibility to their companies.

Often the flex employee can work with their current employer and down size their duties. This allows for an easy transition, comparable compensation and the potential to keep valuable fringe benefits in place. Those looking to make a change in employers or careers should share their wish list with friends who can help them land a favorable position.

For many of us, work is an enjoyable experience and the benefits of staying engaged can keep us alert. The life expectancy for a 65 year old is now in the 80’s for both men and women. Employers need and want us.
