No surprise here, but a series of nonbinding referendums regarding public safety pension reforms passed last night with resounding margins.
Several municipalities, including DeKalb, placed advisory referendums on their ballots asking voters to either support or oppose a message to Illinois legislators asking them to reform pension contributions and benefits for police and firefighters. Reforms were passed this spring for state and municipal employees, but police and firefighters weren’t included in the measure.
Here’s a smattering of the winning percentages:
DeKalb: 76 percent
Carpentersville: 81.3 percent
West Dundee: 79.3 percent
St. Charles: 78.5 percent
Wayne: 85 percent
Downers Grove: 82.8 percent
Brookfield: 79.1 percent
Countryside: 81.4 percent
LaGrange: 85.7 percent
(The Chicago Tribune election results page lists 44 such questions on various ballots. All passed by at least a 3-to-1 margin.)
Your move, Springfield.
