What you suggest about spending some time solving our own problems has some merit, Mr. Sweeny, but perhaps the person you should tell it to is Congressman Manzullo who seems to spend a great deal of time concentrating on improving his relationship with Red China while his own constituents face fewer jobs at lower wages, thanks mostly to the so-called "free trade" policies that he supports, including Permanent Most Favored Nation trading status for China. Because of these policies and their unfortunate but entirely predictable consequences, our problems are tied up with what is going on in China. They cannot be separated. The solution to our problems must necessarily involve some sort of control on China's access to our marketplace. In addition to that economic reality, the moral reality is even more compelling. To suggest that injustice in China is not as important to moral people in this country, where that unjust dictatorship makes much of its huge trade surplus, as the other unspecified American problems you allude to, is no different that suggesting, during the first half of the 20th Century, that people living in the north should ignore lynching of Negroes in the Old South because it is not their problem and they have problems of their own they should solve first. What you suggest is amoral, Mr. Sweeny, and that's a strange thing to come from the pen of a man who, in the aftermath of the Columbine HS massacre, condemned Bill Clinton as a poster-child for amorality.
