Are roads really better in Wisconsin?

February 18th, 2008 at 04:07pm Chuck Sweeny

It occurs to me that we are having another monstrous pothole season, which everyone enjoys cursing and crying and carping about.  They are especially bad this year, all around the Rockford area and the stateline. I was, however, in southern and central Wisconsin over the past five days covering presidential candidates, and the potholes weren’t quite so bad.

This is nothing new; I’ve noticed for years that whenever my car hits Wisconsin pavement, the ride gets smoother. Anybody have similar experiences, or am I just imagining better roads in Wisconsin?

My observation is that the WI roads are better. I wonder if they have different specifications?

As one who drives back and forth between IL and WI on a regular basis, I can state emphatically that the roads in Wisconsin are much better than in Rockford or Illinois.

I have a solution on how to fix the roads however.

Instead of George Bush and all his cronies speding billions, yes billions of our tax dollars on rebuilding Iraq, why don’t we take that money and rebuild Rockford. With the billions left over, we can even fix potholes in every other state 10 times over. Just a thought.

It seems to me that this paper, and our Mayor, are placing all the blame for potholes on the State of Illinois. i.e the “write the Governor” campaign.
There are plenty, plenty, plenty of potholes throughout this city that aren’t under the jurisdiction of the state. But, all the blame goes to Springfield. All the blame for everything in this town always seems to go somewhere else!
But, we’ll have a nice, pothole free, Riverwalk. And a nice new asphalt plant to build it with!

The only place in Rockford that the Mayor ever puts his excellence plan into place is his little Riverwalk area while the rest of Rockford crumbles around his excellence. Interesting thing about Wisconsin is that their taxes usually go where they are intended and are not highjacked for the special interest projects that flow freely throughout this area. Excellence in this administration is defined as bad roads, bad schools, and bad leadership in law enforforcement. Mayor needs a new pair of glasses and 4 wheel drive. Mayor you should try using another E-word mantra in your next campaign….Strive for Excuse….that you excel at.

p.s. Rockford Blacktop was awarded the Apline pothole job this AM. Suprise announcment! Can anyone tell me if anyone else other than Rockford Blacktop has laid down a shovel of asphalt in this town in the last ten years? I’m guessinig the next City Hall built, will be built of asphalt.
