Inquiring minds want to know: Why was Manzullo included in the signing ceremony and the AP photo of that event?

The United States Senate unanimously passed a resolution Thursday, 24 April to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the world’s most known ‘prisoner of conscience’ Burma’s Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of Burma’s democratic movement and Nobel Peace Laureate.

When Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein and Republican senator Mich McConnell moved the resolution in February this year it had the bipartisan support in the Senate.

Under the rules, Congressional Gold Medals require the support of at least two-thirds of the Members of both the Senate and House of Representatives before they can be signed into law by the president.

The Gold Medal bill had to be scrutinized by by the Senate Banking Committee before it can be brought to the Senate floor for final passage. The Senate floor passage means that total approval was given at all levels of the United States Congress for the resolution.

On Thursday, Senate gave the final approval.

The Feinstein-McConnell legislation is the Senate companion to legislation introduced in the House of Representatives by Representatives Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) and Don Manzullo (R-Ill.) Their legislation passed the House in a 400 to 0 vote on December 17, 2007

The Aung Sung Suu Kyi Congressional Gold Medal Act would recognize that Suu Kyi embodies the qualities represented by the medal, the highest honor bestowed by Congress. The Gold Medal would be awarded in recognition of her courageous and unwavering commitment to peace, non-violence, human rights, and democracy in Burma. The legislation would also express solidarity with Suu Kyi and the people of Burma in their continuing struggle for a free and democratic Burma..

So, Don, when will you call for recognizing those thousands working for human rights and democracy in China and denouncing the government that persecutes them?

I won't be holding my breath.
