End of World set for Wednesday; women and minorities to be hardest hit

September 8th, 2008 at 02:58pm Chuck Sweeny

The end of the world is predicted constantly, but on Wednesday, some folks are convinced that mad scientists in Europe are really going to end it for all of us, says the BBC:

Wednesday, you see,  “is when the Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss/French border has its first full beam. The collider is a giant particle accelerator which, by smashing one particle into another, will tell us amazing things about the birth of the universe, scientists hope.”

But skeptics fear that the experiment will doom the earth.  Oh no, Mr. Bill! Seriously, though, this new collider is 17 times the size of the Fermilab here in Illinois. The federal government was going to build a supercollider like Hadron, but decided it was too expensive. So, more high level research moves to Europe. But hey, we ‘ve got way more strip malls than France and Switzerland combined! Read more about the Hadron collider at the Daily Telegraph of London:
