Sweeny Report
The Sweeny Report takes you into the murky world of local, state and national politics. Political Editor Chuck Sweeny will try to de-mystify things for you — once he figures it out himself, that is.

Just rambling on at the end of a bad day on Wall Street

The campaign will change drastically this week, as we forget about lipstick-on-pig remarks and start concentrating on the one, overriding issue: the financial meltdown.

Either way, we’re going to get more regulation; not quite so much with McCain/Palin as with Obama. Note that I use McCain/Palin but not Obama/Biden. But any notion that we are a free market economy should be dispensed with. We are a socialist nation except for 50 percent of our health care.

I  believe the intense interest in Sarah Palin reflects an intrinsic feeling the American people have about McCain. He’s 72, but he’s an old 72. He may  not survive a first term. I observed him up close in Osh Kosh last March and was taken aback at how very old he seemed to act.  This feeling was captured brilliantly by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in their opening SNL sketch — we are examining Gov. Palin not as the next vice president, but as the first woman president.

The intense obsession with Gov. Palin started 1 minute after her announcement and has been 99% of the liberal media’s talk since. They are scared to death of her and are smearing whatever they can Really sad. Could you even imagine this happening with the parties reversed?? She has way more experience in gov’t than Obama. If the national media was only fair and balanced. Has there been anywhere near the amount of coverage of Obama/Biden comdined? NO! But you are right, Chuck- socialization is what they want. They are the number 1 and 3 most liberal in the Senate. Scary stuff. But will anyone ever talk about it?

    Chuck,

You might say the U.S. is moving toward socialism, but the government does not yet have “ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.” It’s true that we’re not a free market economy. However, most political scientists would tell you that we live in a welfare state - and less of one than many European countries. The reality lies somewhere inbetween the free market and socialism.

    Juice,

Apparently you have forgotten how the conservatives treated Geraldine Ferraro, who was our FIRST female VP candidate. Remember? Palin isn’t getting anything she shouldn’t expect and doesn’t deserve. She’s just a gimmick and the liberals realize it. You will too, soon enough.

Yes, and I think you’ve also forgotten a bit about Hillary Clinton. She was accused of murder, for heaven’s sake. It’s not a beauty pageant anymore people. This is the big leagues. They play to win.

Ferrero’s problem was not her, but her husband.
