House impeaches Gov. Blagojevich, 114-1

Add comment January 9th, 2009

Gov. Rod Blagojevich has become the first governor in Illinois history to be impeached. The vote in the state House was 114-0, with Rep. Milt Patterson, D-Chicago being the only dissenting vote.

Now the Senate will hold a trial. To convict the governor takes 40 votes, a two-thirds majority.

Impeachment was a foregone conclusion, but conviction after what is expected to be a 3 week trial is not a sure thing. However, I think senators, will in the end realize that they have to convict.

However, the gov is scheduled to hold a news conference at 2 p.m. Senators have their fingers crossed hoping that he will resign and spare them of having to actually kick out a sitting governor  who probably knows a thing or two about what some senators have done that is not on the up-and-up.
