I’ve heard of strange newspaper takeovers — real estate mogul Sam Zell buying the Trib comes to mind — but here’s something that takes the cake. Russian oligarch Alexander Lebedev, a KGB agent during the Soviet era, is poised to buy the London Evening Standard.He said he grew fond of the sensationalistic Standard while reading it as part of his spy duties for Moscow. The economic calamity has its bright points. One is that Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez, the socialist revolutionary who nationalized his country’s oil company and kicked out the foreign oil folks, is now begging to get them back. The nationalized oil company is now run by political hacks instead of oil pros, and production is way down. Add to that the low per-barrel price of oil, and you’ve got one, desperate revolutionary.
