Total lack of Rockford, Winn. County clout means few “stimulus” projects

Rich Carter , press spokesman for U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo, R-Egan, says what I expected all along: There’s precious little funding for infrastructure for Winnebago County in President Obama’s stimulus plan.
Says Carter:
“We just received a letter from IDOT Secretary Milt Sees and his list of “shovel ready” projects he is pursuing with the stimulus money for the 16th Congressional District, which as you know includes 9 counties. As I suspected, it’s all routine re-surfacing and patching. No new capacity projects. As you know, we were extremely concerned when we learned road projects would only make up 4 percent of the stimulus and that all of the money would go to the states. With that in mind, it’s really not that surprising that so little is in the program for the district. If my math is correct, Winnebago County is getting less than $7 million. With even less overall funding for mass transit, I’m worried about the rail projects as well.”
Altogether, it’s about $38.5 million for 24 road projects resurfacing 55 miles and change worth of road. Big deal.
The paltry amount for Rockford and Winnebago County represents the sad fact that Rockford and Winnebago County have absolutely NO INFLUENCE in state government, thanks in part to our clueless legislative delegation and to our equally clueless city and county leaders. It’s time to concentrate much less on ROCK STAT and pay more attention to getting some ROCK CLOUT.
