Winters joining chorus urging Burris to resign, wants special election. Won’t happen.

State Rep. Dave Winters, R-Shirland, adds his voice to the growing chorus of Illinois political leaders urging the resignation of U.S. Sen. Roland Burris, D-Chicago. He and other Republicans want to have a special election May 26 to choose a new senator.
That won’t happen, because Democrats are just short of the magical 60 votes they need to override Republican filibusters. With Republicans tying up the tied Coleman-Franken race in Minnesota with a legion of lawyers, Dems can’t risk losing Illinois to a Republican candidate who would be able to count on a boatload of money coming in from national party donors.
This may be a moot issue, because I don’t think Burris will resign. And I dont’ think they can make him.
