Forget “2030 Plan,” the only real county land use plan is the “Clout Plan.”

In the wake of the Winnebago County Board’s 15-8 vote to approve the controversial Cannell subdivision in an environmentally sensitive area of northern Winnebago County, I have a suggestion:
You’ve been going through the motions of passing a “2030 Plan” for land use in the county. Just forget about it. Nobody will believe you’re serious, anyway.
The only land use plan that we’ve ever had in Winnebago County is the “Clout Plan,” because whenever a clout-heavy developer wants to do something, he seems to get his way.
Your 2030 plan is a sham.

This does not make any sense, no matter how you cut it. First there seem to be a majority of people against it. Secondly, do they really think it is a good time to start building new homes again? Also, isn’t this the same developer that halt work on the Brunswick XL center next to the theater on east state street due to lack of funds?

Chuck,
This is the standard operating procedure in many communities. Out where I live now, I see lots of pristine property bulldozed over by some politically connected developer in the name of progress. Here it is probably even worse, because we essentially have a one-party system which makes it much easier for the developers to make “donations“. Also, the connected builders seem to get away with a lot of fairly obvious code, safety, and labor violations as well. And if a builder does not get the required permissions to build, he does it anyway. Then the city says, “Well the damage is done. No sense in making him tear it all down now.”
