Memories of Neil Armstrong’s July 20, 1969 moon walk

Add comment July 12th, 2009

Can it be 40 years since Neil Armstrong became the first human being to walk on the Moon? Indeed it can be, and July 20 is the day.

It was one of those “where you when” days for people who are old enough to remember. I can still picture my surroundings vividly. I was a college student in Chicago, living at 1135 W. Lunt Ave., in the East Rogers Park neighborhood.

My roommate, George Castle of Highland Park, and I watched the “moon walk”event on my 13″ portable TV. George had a whale of a time pacing up and down the living room floor imitating President Richard Nixon, who was having a phone chat with the astronauts.

“Hello Moon? Hello Moon?” said George. He did a pretty good Nixon, too.
