Is Library budget cut plan a preview of mayoral war with police, fire unions?

July 15th, 2009 at 07:59pm Chuck Sweeny

Could Mayor Larry Morrissey’s attempt to unilaterally whack the library workers’ pension contributions from the 2010 city budget, also be a veiled threat to the fire and police unions?

Could be.  I predict will see the four-versus-three men on a truck issue come up again, and that the mayor will ask for give-backs from both the police and firefighters unions.

They will not agree, of course, and the negotiations will no doubt end up in the hands of  an arbitrator who, I hope he/she won’t take two years to decide.

City sales tax receipts are declining. Next year, property tax collections will decline, too, because of the three-year-average of real-estate assessments will begin to reflect the downturn that started in 2008.

Police and firefighters will fight City Hall, but you can’t  pay money you don’t have. It’s either concessions or layoffs.
