Hynes’ ad hits Quinn on tax quote he made at Register Star editorial board

Dan Hynes,  who is running for governor against Gov. Pat Quinn in the Feb. 2 Democratic primary, is running a TV ad that features a statement Quinn made at an April 23 meeting of the RRS Editorial Board. (Hynes is the Illinois comptroller.)

In the snipped of the meeting Hynes’ ad uses, we are talking about Quinn’s proposed 50 percent income tax increase, when board member Bob Trojan, a Rockford manufacturer, notes that the governor’s plan would raise taxes on an individual making more than $14,000.

Quinn interrupts Trojan and says, “But isn’t that part of what we have to do to get our state back on its feet?”

Hynes’ ad goes on to castigate Quinn for proposing to raise taxes on middle class folks. Hynes, the ad concludes, will “ask the wealthy to pay their fair share.” See the ad by CLICKING HERE.

When we saw the ad, we wondered if Quinn’s quote had been taken out of context. I reviewed the video of our editorial board meeting, as did Editorial Page Editor Wally Haas. We both concluded that the quote was not taken out of context. Indeed, as questioner Trojan pressed on, Quinn defended his plan. Watch the editorial board meeting here.

I remember raising that point on these blogs when I put income amounts into that state website. I wonder if Bob picked up from what I wrote. I also pointed out how disingenous it was for Quinn to suggest a tax increase on practically all working people while promoting redistribution of state assets to non-contributors. May this doom the biggest tax increase in Illinois history and the candidate who propagated it!

I’m pretty sure he got it from the governor’s own website, which gave people a handy dandy chart to calculate who would pay how much under the tax plan.

Yeah, probably so. I also picked up on that quickly.

Quinn’s video scares me even more, we need the state to soend more money to get the economy moving and we need to have shared sacrifice to pay for it. It sounds like a never ending circle more spending means more taxes which mean more spenidng will be needed to help out the overtaxed and on and on.

Pat Quinn is a radical lefty gadfly, who just doesnt have the skills or ability to be a leader, or govern effectively. I hope the next time he comes to Rockford, Chuck peppers with questions about his delay in signing the state capital bill that cost us an entire construction season with immediate jobs, and what is the status of local road projects like the widening of 173 in Machesney Park??? I have heard that no one knows if it will ever begin!!!! Meanwhile, were paying all the increased fees and taxes.
