Where do you want to day trip?

July 21st, 2008 at 02:32pm Thomas V. Bona

Chicago Rockford International Airport has been successful so far in its day trip program: Two sold-out trips to Niagara Falls, one nearly full plane to Indianapolis Sunday and now tentatively plans to go to Mackinac Island in August.

Officials say more possibilities are on the way, and hope to do a few trips a month. I know I’d love to do one if it ever works out, but I’m pretty tripped out this year. Maybe if something knocks me off my feet…

Where would you like to go? Here are some possibilities, either named by the airport or proposed by yours truly:

  • Washington, D.C.
  • Mt. Rushmore
  • Mall of America
  • Springfield/Branson, Mo.
  • Bowling Green, Ky. (if at first you don’t succeed…)
  • New York City (I can hope, no?)
  • Niagara Falls, again
  • (your idea here)

Also, would you want a one-day or overnight trip? Let me know by commenting below, or emailing tbona@rrstar.com.

New Orleans for Mardi Gras; Nashville; Memphis, and I also heard the suggestion of Cleveland for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I would love a day trip to those places.

    All good choices, Jason.

A co-worker suggested going to Cubs road games in Pittsburgh, Cincy, etc., later this season.

How about an over-nighter to NYC which includes a Broadway show, as well as sightseeing? I got to do some of that one time and it was pretty neat.

There are limitless opportunities for day trips when you take into consideration the amount of professional sports teams in the area performing away games, as well as die-hard fans with disposable income. NY would probably fill up a flight pretty fast.

It looks like Mt. Rushmore and D.C. will be a go.

Although not on sale yet, RAP and BWI are loaded into the Southern Skyways CRS:

This “day trip” program is really started to take shape. Mackinac sold out, and by the looks of it, Indy should by flight day.

Airport managers across the country should be watching this development.
