Giving Tuesday

A very simple idea about philanthropy has gone global and for the second year in a row, United Way of the Rock River Valley is taking part. #GivingTuesday, which takes place on December 2, is a movement to celebrate and inspire giving instead of getting during the holiday season. This global social media campaign challenges charities, families, businesses, and individuals to change the way people talk about and participate in the giving season.

#GivingTuesday reminds people that the holidays are not just about consumerism, but also about communities. United Way encourages people to take action by giving their treasure, time, and voice. The hope is that #GivingTuesday will become synonymous with giving, in the same way that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are associated with shopping.

So what can you do? Here are three ways to give back on #GivingTuesday:

1. Give Your Treasure. Make a one-time donation to United Way’s Strong Neighborhoods Initiative — because strong neighborhoods make a strong community. Give now >

2. Give Your Time. Take the pledge to become a reader, tutor, or mentor, and help improve the education of adults and children in our area. Take the pledge now >

3. Give Your Voice. Share why you give back and what you are doing to make our neighborhoods better, and upload your #PointOfU to social media. Download this #PointOfU template and use hashtags #PointOfU and #GivingTuesday.

Ultimately, #GivingTuesday proves that the holidays can be about giving and giving back. It celebrates how we can do more with our wallets than just shop – and that we can give as well as we get. Join United Way of Rock River Valley in channeling the generous spirit of the holiday season and inspire others to promote a tradition of giving.
