Give more, give smarter, and give great on #Giving Tuesday

United Way Giving Tuesday

This year, on Tuesday, December 1, United Way of Rock River Valley is participating in #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving smarter and greater. Similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days synonymous with holiday shopping, #GivingTuesday, held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, harnesses the power of social media to inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

Last year, more than 30,000 organizations in 68 countries came together to celebrate #GivingTuesday. Since its start in 2012, which United Way is one of the founding partners, #GivingTuesday has inspired giving around the world, resulting in greater donations, volunteer hours, and activities that bring about real change in communities. It’s an opportunity for ordinary people to come together to do extraordinary things.

This year, United Way’s goal is to raise $4,000 to support families and children with programming for Strong Neighborhoods House in Ellis Heights and Midtown neighborhoods. A joint collaboration between United Way, City of Rockford Police Department and ZION Development, these houses will build positive relationships between residents and local police officers, provide necessary human services directly to the residents, and improve the overall quality of life in the neighborhood. Programming includes financial literacy and mental health resources for families and activities for youth. The first of these houses, located on 908 8th Avenue in Rockford, Ill., is set to open on December 1.
