Family Fitness Night

It was another great night of nutritional information and exercise during Family Fitness Night at Lewis Lemon Elementary. During a hands-on demonstration by University of Illinois Extension Unit 1, Winnebago County, families sampled a healthy corn and bean chili recipe that they can easily make at home. Families also jumped, kicked, and twirled to a great Zumba dance workout led by Assistant Principal Vivian Keuter. In fact after the Zumba dance, one young kid shared that she didn’t realize you can have so much fun exercising.

The family fitness night program is a direct response to needs discovered through United Way’s Strong Neighborhoods initiative. During the discovery, residents acknowledged the high cost of healthier foods as a barrier to healthy living on a limited income. In collaboration with Lewis Lemon School PTO, United Way leverages existing relationships and resources to incorporate a health and wellness education component to the school’s monthly family night programming. Lewis Lemon School PTO is planning another Family Fitness Night in March.
