We have an opportunity

May 9th, 2008 at 11:02am Jan Herbert

There’s a lot of complaining going on (my mother would have said bellyaching) about the cost of gas, how often fill-ups are needed, and how much oil companies are making. Each day, every one of us has an opportunity reduce the amount of gas we use by driving more sensibly, leaving on time so we don’t have to speed, trips we can skip and/or drive-up lanes we can avoid. Why don’t we just remember do it?

Here’s an idea: For the rest of this year, DON’T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL.
If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.
But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers.
Acting together we can make a difference

I can’t seem to find your invitation about the price of gasoline when I started driving, so if I may, I’ll mention it here: I’m 66yrs. old. When I started driving in 1958, the price of regular was 30.9 cents a gallon, and Ethyl was 2 cents more expensive.

I can’t even remember how many years that one’s been making it’s way around the internet, Brenda.
    Snopes says it won’t work:

and I tend to accept their reasoning above yours.

Everyone thinks the world revolves around the USA… Sorry folks but that’s not the case. The silly idea that here in the USA all we have to do to lower gas prices is to stop buying gas from Exxon or Mobil… Can people actually be that naive?

Let me ask the obvious question…. What’s better, having USA based Oil companies making record profits or having Middle East companies making record profits?

Duh… I think we would prefer USA companies to be making the money.

Ok now that this is off the table… Just what the heck do you expect the Big Oil companies to do in the WORLD MARKETS THEY SELL TOO? Are they suppose to sell a gallon of gas to us in the USA for $2 when they can sell the same gallon of gas internationally for $4?

If you were one of the many retired People who’s Pension Fund owned stock in the Big Oil companies and were counting on the dividend earnings to pay their pensions… Would you want the Big Oil companies to give away the gas at way below FREE MARKET PRICES and reduce the dividend earnings paid to stockholders, ie. many of which are Pension Funds???

I say it would a whole lot better for us to let them earn all the profitis FREE MARKETS ALLOW but also require them to INVEST some of those profits for long term improvements in new refineries AND DRILLING FOR MORE OIL IN USA CONTROLLED TERRITORIES!

    Come on… isn’t this obvious?
