Why We Vote
The Register Star has brought together a group of people from all over the Rock River Valley to serve on our Election 2008 Voters’ Panel. These men and women are Republicans, Democrats, Independents and Green party members. Some are high school students. Some are retired. And some fall in between those two age groups. They all share this: The upcoming election is important and voters do have voices. They’ll share them in this blog.

Tuesday Primaries

Add comment March 5th, 2008

Barack Obama is still leading in delegates! Our Democratic friends of this country, however, ostensibly are still closely divided — too closely. I’m most happy that the republicans don’t have as close a race; that’d be really intense.

The spitting contests between Hillary Clinton and Obama started a while ago, but tensions are increasing now and it’s frightening. The people didn’t like Hillary as a nice lady, so they told her to get tough — also known as accusatory (”Shame on you, Barack Obama”? Who is she? His mother?) — and after doing so, she starts winning elections?! Luckily, Obama does not have to stoop to as low a level as she. We can only hope that the superdelegates come through for the Barackstar to shoo him in at the national convention.

Regarding the lack of understanding among many people as to why our country votes the way it does… what a good question! It did, however, allow Thomas Jefferson to be president, as noted so humbly SO OFTEN by ol’ W, so it can’t be that bad, can it?

We’ve all heard far too many pontifications regarding change, so here’s a funny video that I hope will give everyone a good laugh:

This has been a very interesting political season. On the democratic side Tuesday really solved nothing. I think you might see a Hillary/Obama ticket. And other than change I have heard nothing with any substance. On the other hand McCain is now the nominee, his success will depend upon his VP pick. He needs a strong conservative selection which in turn will excite conservatives … myself included.

John McCain’s last Republican competitor, Mike Huckabee, has dropped out of the race, and I’m disappointed. I was seriously looking forward to witnessing the miracle that the former Arkansas governor was praying for.

Now, I eagerly anticipate the drama that’s certain to unfold between Obama and Hillary. My biggest concern is that she’ll succeed in getting the Democratic party to rewrite the rules that apply to the Michigan and Florida delegates. If the rules ARE changed, I certainly hope those states will have a do-over of sorts, allowing both candidates to campaign there and allowing voters to re-cast their votes, rather than letting the votes stand, which would be completely unfair.

I know this won’t get very far because it was Mike Huckabee’s idea, but it is a good idea and it should be done in place of the proposed $600 & $1200 gifts from the government.

Most people will use that money at WalMart or other stores that almost exclusively sell merchandise manufactured in China. So who does it help? China. They don’t need anymore of our money. Actually, the money we get may be borrowed from China. I don’t know this for a fact but it seems logical to me.

Why not take that money and use it to rebuild our infrastructure? Our roads, dams and bridges are in a sorry state of disrepair and need our attention. We would fix what is broken, hire our citizens to do the work and keep the money in circulation in our own country.

This could be started quickly because most states and municipalities have plans for making these repairs but lack only the money to effect them. If we make this money available to them, construction can begin immediately,

It just seems like a sensible solution that will put money where it will do the most good by hiring people who are out of work and taking care of infrastructure problems that are in real need of attention.

The primary season has been fun and exciting to watch, especially for political junkies like myself. My thoughts on the candidates:

Mike Huckabee…even though he is the opposite of me politically I really do like the guy. His wit and charm and “likability” factor are very appealing. He comes across as very genuine. Too bad he’s not a democrat.

John McCain…I love to see the republicans fight and John McCain is a good candidate to ensure the infighting continues. The right wingers and the moderates in that party just can’t seem to agree. If he wins the election in November he will be at LOT easier to take than our current president (although I DO NOT like his Iraq policy “we’ll be there for a 100 years”.

Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton…I like Obama, but could accept a Hillary nomination and presidency without problem. I hope they can continue to be civil and respectful with each other as the campaign continues. An Obama/Clinton ticket could be very interesting. That would require some negotiating to put that ticket together.
