Why We Vote
The Register Star has brought together a group of people from all over the Rock River Valley to serve on our Election 2008 Voters’ Panel. These men and women are Republicans, Democrats, Independents and Green party members. Some are high school students. Some are retired. And some fall in between those two age groups. They all share this: The upcoming election is important and voters do have voices. They’ll share them in this blog.

Jump starting the economy

I know this won’t get very far because it was Mike Huckabee’s idea, but it is a good idea and it should be done in place of the proposed $600 & $1200 gifts from the government.

Most people will use that money at WalMart or other stores that almost exclusively sell merchandise manufactured in China. So who does it help? China. They don’t need anymore of our money. Actually, the money we get may be borrowed from China. I don’t know this for a fact but it seems logical to me.

Why not take that money and use it to rebuild our infrastructure? Our roads, dams and bridges are in a sorry state of disrepair and need our attention. We would fix what is broken, hire our citizens to do the work and keep the money in circulation in our own country.

This could be started quickly because most states and municipalities have plans for making these repairs but lack only the money to effect them. If we make this money available to them, construction can begin immediately,

It just seems like a sensible solution that will put money where it will do the most good by hiring people who are out of work and taking care of infrastructure problems that are in real need of attention.

The thing that amazes me is the liberal media and their democratic counterparts never mentioned the economy the past few years as it was expanding. Now all of a sudden were in a slowdown (NOT RECESSION) and you hear about it everyday like its about to collapse.I guess they needed something to talk about ,the Iraq war is succeeding.Think about this.If something bad happens its good for the democrats. If something positive happens its good for republicans. Some examples would be Iraq when things were not going well the Dems were all over it blaming Bush. Now there has been a turnaround and do you think you here any Dems saying anything positive?Lets go with another example the economy. You have heard nothing positive form the Dems regarding the economy the last few years. Now that they think things might get bad its good for them.Pretty sad I would say.

Don…that’s a good thought …I will not spend my tax rebate at Walmart! The truth is I am looking forward to getting some of my money back and I plan on putting it into our travel fund.

The value of the dollar has dropped dramatically. Oil is at an all time high. People are losing their homes and jobs. Most economists say that we’re either in a recession or on the verge. Only Bush and his advisors are denying that we’re close to or already in a recession. He didn’t even know that there are predictions of $4 per gallon gas for the summer.
Sounds like the economy isn’t doing so well right now which makes it fair game for the opposition.
As I stated, I’m an Independent and don’t have a candidate in the race for the White House unless you want to count Ralph Nader, which I don’t. But the state of the economy affects us all know matter what our political affilation. As I have taken the Democrats to task for their whinging of being in the minority for the last 6 years and now their whining for not having a large enough majority to get things done, I have to take the Republicans to task for their complaining about the liberal press.
