Why We Vote
The Register Star has brought together a group of people from all over the Rock River Valley to serve on our Election 2008 Voters’ Panel. These men and women are Republicans, Democrats, Independents and Green party members. Some are high school students. Some are retired. And some fall in between those two age groups. They all share this: The upcoming election is important and voters do have voices. They’ll share them in this blog.

The Liberal Media?????

6 comments March 15th, 2008

As I’ve participated in political discussions recently my conservative friends talk about the “Liberal Media”…you know what…I don’t get it.  Do the conservatives really think there is a liberal conspiracy in the media?  As I watch, listen and read the media I have to say that the most well balanced reporting comes from CNN, MSNBC, NPR and the RR Star.  The most biased media would be Fox (which I refuse to watch) and of course the hateful and mean spirited Rush Limbaugh.  CNN always has opposing viewpoints; does anyone think that Chris Matthews isn’t tough on everyone; NPR (my favorite radio) is always careful to give considerate and respectful to all perspectives; I read columnists in the RR Star that I would never agree with.  I have a sense that those who complain about the liberal media are desperate to justify their positions and therefore they resort to blaming the media for the shortcomings in their arguments.   My suggestion…stop blaming the media, stop listening to Rush, stop watching Fox and perhaps you’ll start to see why we liberals believe the way we do.

Our Senate has just voted down a proposal to place a one year moratorium on earmarks. Did anyone reasonably think that our elected officials in Washington, D.C. would voluntarily stop trying to buy our votes with our money? All is not lost, though. Listening to their justification (especially Dick Durbin’s) for voting against such a measure is really entertaining. They all should have their own show on Comedy Central…… just before, “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” It would be a great lead in for one of the funniest shows on T.V.

The big oil rip off

11 comments March 14th, 2008

Oil prices have reached $110 per barrel……. and nothing is done. The oil companies post record 4th quarter profits while receiving tax rebates….. and nothing is done. No new refineries have been applied for in 20 plus years… and nothing is done.  We have a president and a vice president who are oil men…… so nothing will get done.

They said last  year that gas would reach an all  time high of $3 per gallon and it did. They’re saying that gas will reach $4 per gallon and it will.

Our president, an oil man, pleads innocence when a reporter asks him about $4 per gallon gas. Never heard that.

And WE do nothing. Shame on him and shame on us He has correctly assessed the situation that the American public and the Congress are a bunch of sheep who have done nothing,  will do nothing and can do nothing. Shame on us again.

Why Isn’t This A Recession?

3 comments March 14th, 2008

Our dollar is at it’s lowest level in history. Our budget deficit is higher than ever. Oil prices are at an all time high. Wages are stagnent. Diesel fuel is is at $4.00 per gallon raising the  cost of transportation of goods to all time highs. People have to choose between having fuel to get to work and to buy food.  Our President’s failed economic policies and our Congress’ willingness to go along with them have caused this situation.

Even though we might think  this is a recession, it isn’t. Why? Because our politicians have decreed that it’s not

Ferraro Comments

What do the recent comments of Geraldine Ferraro regarding the presidential candicacy of one candidate say about the subject of race and diversity in America?  Too much.  I was blessed to hear the daughter of Bishop Desmond Tutu speak on race and diversity.  I was impressed and informed when she stated that in order to deal effectively with race and diversity you must do the following:  be honest and open, recognize and address, identity within yourself the idoysyncrancies regarding the subject, deal with it. Unfortunately for Geraldine Ferraro many of us are not ready to deal with the subject openly.  Ergo, the public flogging that she received. In order for us to reach solutions for issues facing our country the candidates must address all issues, particularly race and diversity, honestly, frankly and factually.  The candidate who is ready will be the one who moves us forward successfully.

The Election Process

1 comment March 7th, 2008

I am excited about this election year as it is the first election in my adult life that we have had so many excellent and qualified candidates to select from. The excitement is tinged with disappointment because of the selection process. Each person should have the ability to study each candidate and make his selection. The states with “late” primaries are at a disadvantage because many of the candidates have withdrawn for a variety of reasons, primarily the cost for the campaign. We need to find a solution, preferably nationwide primaries on the same day and limiting the amount of time a candidate may campaign. Some of the candidates for the presidential election have been campaigning for over two years. The process must be adjusted.

Tuesday Primaries

Add comment March 5th, 2008

Barack Obama is still leading in delegates! Our Democratic friends of this country, however, ostensibly are still closely divided — too closely. I’m most happy that the republicans don’t have as close a race; that’d be really intense.

The spitting contests between Hillary Clinton and Obama started a while ago, but tensions are increasing now and it’s frightening. The people didn’t like Hillary as a nice lady, so they told her to get tough — also known as accusatory (”Shame on you, Barack Obama”? Who is she? His mother?) — and after doing so, she starts winning elections?! Luckily, Obama does not have to stoop to as low a level as she. We can only hope that the superdelegates come through for the Barackstar to shoo him in at the national convention.

Regarding the lack of understanding among many people as to why our country votes the way it does… what a good question! It did, however, allow Thomas Jefferson to be president, as noted so humbly SO OFTEN by ol’ W, so it can’t be that bad, can it?

We’ve all heard far too many pontifications regarding change, so here’s a funny video that I hope will give everyone a good laugh:

Tuesday Results

This has been a very interesting political season. On the democratic side Tuesday really solved nothing. I think you might see a Hillary/Obama ticket. And other than change I have heard nothing with any substance. On the other hand McCain is now the nominee, his success will depend upon his VP pick. He needs a strong conservative selection which in turn will excite conservatives … myself included.

Super Tuesday II is over - What’s Next?

John McCain’s last Republican competitor, Mike Huckabee, has dropped out of the race, and I’m disappointed. I was seriously looking forward to witnessing the miracle that the former Arkansas governor was praying for.

Now, I eagerly anticipate the drama that’s certain to unfold between Obama and Hillary. My biggest concern is that she’ll succeed in getting the Democratic party to rewrite the rules that apply to the Michigan and Florida delegates. If the rules ARE changed, I certainly hope those states will have a do-over of sorts, allowing both candidates to campaign there and allowing voters to re-cast their votes, rather than letting the votes stand, which would be completely unfair.

Jump starting the economy

I know this won’t get very far because it was Mike Huckabee’s idea, but it is a good idea and it should be done in place of the proposed $600 & $1200 gifts from the government.

Most people will use that money at WalMart or other stores that almost exclusively sell merchandise manufactured in China. So who does it help? China. They don’t need anymore of our money. Actually, the money we get may be borrowed from China. I don’t know this for a fact but it seems logical to me.

Why not take that money and use it to rebuild our infrastructure? Our roads, dams and bridges are in a sorry state of disrepair and need our attention. We would fix what is broken, hire our citizens to do the work and keep the money in circulation in our own country.

This could be started quickly because most states and municipalities have plans for making these repairs but lack only the money to effect them. If we make this money available to them, construction can begin immediately,

It just seems like a sensible solution that will put money where it will do the most good by hiring people who are out of work and taking care of infrastructure problems that are in real need of attention.
