This is getting a little weird

State rep. Jim Sacia cannot accept the action of the state legislature to ban horse slaughter in the state of Illinois. So…in response he attempting to re-introduce a bill to permit the horse slaughter plant in Dekalb to reopen…and…he’s written a letter to Oprah hoping to get her on board! Never mind that there are some extremely significant issues he had ought to be addressing as our state representative (i.e. school funding & quality of education in Illinois). He is overly focused (no, not just overly focused - he’s gone off the deep end) on the horse slaughter issue. In American culture we DON’T EAT HORSES. Our sensibility is that horses are animals with which our relationship is on a higher plane and other than as a food source (as is our relationship with cats, dogs and other pets). If Mr. Sacia is concerned about the export of horses to Mexico for inhumane slaughter, he should contact our U.S congressmen and senators and encourage them to ban export. Then he can return to focus his energy and efforts toward our needs in northern Illinois.

Mr. Murray, you are right on target. I wrote this upstanding legislator when he tried this the first time and basically was told that the citizens of Illinois that asked for the law are “uninformed” and proceeded to give the usually pro slaughter rhetoric. I replied and corrected his comment letting him know that he was the one that was uninformed. He considers butchering a live horse humane euthanasia – never mind that the captive bolt is not designed to kill an animal so it does not provide a “good death”. I gave him solid facts and figures and of course, never heard from him again. The pro groups are just so appalled with what is happening in Mexico and yet, they don’t support the legislation that will stop it. They don’t understand that the kill houses are not providing a service but in the business to make money for their parent companies in Belgium and France. They don’t understand that the number of horses slaughtered is based on the demand for meat, not the availability of horses. If there is a surplus of horses, the blame should go to the folks that created the mess – those that keep breeding and can’t afford to care for the animals. It’s the breed and dump cycle and until slaughter is not an option, the cycle will continue. A bad economy and bad decisions by owners/breeders is not the fault of horse advocates. People are losing their homes and abandoning animals – all kinds of animals and yet, every time a story is published, they only comment on the horses and how the closure of the domestic kill houses caused it. Never mind they also left behind cats, dogs and other critters. The theme is always…If the kill houses were open, they wouldn’t have abandoned their horses. When you ask why the same was happening when the kill houses were open, they don’t answer. Slaughter is not a deterrent to abuse and neglect and there is data to prove it but the pro groups don’t want to deal with facts – just baseless scare tactics. Many of the articles are outright false but they just keep pumping them out, even when they’re investigated and proven false. Do they really think the American public is that gullible?

Another case of the politicians at every level who answer to theirbig business friends and not the common citizen. I am so sick and tired of the people in all levels of government and in both parties that believe they hold their office by devine intervention. We have to stop electing these unresponsive, idiotic political hacks.

I’m sorry. I said “Devine intervention” when I meant Devine Right. They wouldn’t know the difference but we do.

Vicki…thanks for your comments and information. Your info nicely complements the information from my blog. Let’s stay active in this cause and not allow rep. Sacia to bully with his side of the cause

Yesterday while listening to the news, I heard a story about how Illinoisans want to retain the right to recall their legislators should it be deemed necessary. I for one insist we are afforded this important legal right. I cant think of a better place to start recalling IL legislators than with Jim Sacia.
For the past 5 years we’ve heard nothing from Sacia but pro horse slaughter propaganda, which most assuredly has been bought and paid for by his Belgium horse slaughter buddies from Cavel International. Good grief, does this guy not have anything better to do while being on the taxpayer payroll, than lobby for a business that brings absolutely ZERO revenue to the state of IL?
Given the multitude of important issues facing Illinoisans and Rep. Sacia’s obvious disconcern for anything but horse slaughter, I’d say its high time for a change come our next election cycle.
