The Register Star has brought together a group of people from all over the Rock River Valley to serve on our Election 2008 Voters' Panel. These men and women are Republicans, Democrats, Independents and Green party members. Some are high school students. Some are retired. And some fall in between those two age groups. They all share this: The upcoming election is important and voters do have voices. They'll share them in this blog.

Don,

A heartfelt thank you for this post. Of the four RRStar Political blogs you are the only one who addressed what today is about.

Your characterization of America, her spirit, ideals, and sacrifice for the world is right on the mark.

Thank you again,
David

Don, I disagree strongly. Memorial Day is not what you wrote about. I Your essay is fine, and I agree with the points you made, but your words are appropriate on Independence Day.

Memorial Day , formerly called Decoration Day, was set aside by General Logan at the end of the Civil War specifically to honor those who died in that great calamity.

In later years, its meaning was extended to the fallen service members of all our nation's wars.

That's what it's about. Paying tribute to those who gave their lives doing what a president told hem to do. They obeyed willingly and we honor their service by decorating their graves.
