Words and Music
On your average Tuesday around 10 a.m., you can find Collin Quick at Target picking up the new music releases for the week. The self-described “music nerd” is an avid reader of Spin, Rolling Stone, Alternative Press and Filter, and can’t function without a backbeat of some sort. From concerts and back-stage passes to leaked albums and B-sides, Collin spends what could be described as “a little too much time” listening to anything he can get his hands on.

Blue Oyster Cult to rock Waterfront

Sweet.

We’ve got our ’70s act for the festival. Don’t fear the reaper people. Don’t.

Side note: I saw BOC play at the McHenry Fiesta Days about five years ago. For some reason, the band kept throwing guitar picks at the audience. After awhile, it just got annoying.

2 Waterfront acts announced, about a hundred or more to go

Now that we’ve found out two of this year’s On the Waterfront acts, the rest will soon follow.

First thoughts on Puddle of Mudd and Finger Eleven?

Alright, a smaller version of Wing Ding!

In truth, Puddle of Mudd peaked back in 2003 and no one has heard from them since. Until they released a new album…. right? Either way, they should go the way of Limp Bizkit and just stop trying and disappear.

Finger Eleven, on the other hand, are doing well. They actually always have, in a sense. Catchy songs that get a fair amount of airplay and hey, they played here last year at Wing Ding so they have to be doing something right, right?

I’m still waiting for the Thursday night act to be announced. Last year was a former “American Idol,” so I’m going to guess we’re going to get something in the same pop-rock vein to kickoff the festivities.

Danny Federici

The longtime keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist of the Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Danny Federici, died Thursday, April 17 of melanoma.

Federici has played on every album since 1975’s “Born to Run.” In a post on the band’s Web site, Springsteen said “Danny and I worked together for 40 years - he was the most wonderfully fluid keyboard player and a pure natural musician. I loved him very much … we grew up together.

The band has postponed several shows over the next couple days, but vows to make them up.

A sad day for music.

AT&&T blue room is rebroadcasting highlights from the 2007 weekend April 16 - today - at noon at attblueroom.com.

Arcade Fire

Selected acts include the Arcade Fire (above), Bjork, Interpol, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many, many more.

If you’re heading out the California festival - which kicks off in 10 days - check out last year’s sets for, you know, quality music.

Album releases for April 15

Just some of the releases for today:

Thrice - “The Alchemy Files: Vols III and IV - Air and Earth”
Phantom Planet - “Raise the Dead”
Everclear - “Vegas Years”
The Kooks - “Konk”
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - “My Bloody Underground”
Mariah Carey - “E=MC2″

I’m going to guess that Mariah Carey takes the top spot for the week. Her last album, “The Emancipation of Mimi,” went platinum six times over.  For someone who peaked back in 1998, Carey has the power to take this album platinum a couple times.
